KIRSTY RUSSEL

PhD candidate, Laboratory of Molecular Ecology and Evolution, University of Auckland.
Field co-ordinator for the Tongan component of the South Pacific Whale Research Project.

Kirsty’s primary research is on New Zealand’s endemic dolphin, the Hector’s dolphin. This species is internationally recognised as endangered, with the North island population critically endangered at fewer than 100 individuals and genetically distinct from other populations. This research involves both ecological and molecular techniques to gain a better understanding of the habitat requirements, population demographics and isolation of this population. Information gained will assist with the management of this species. Kirsty has also been involved with the Tongan component of the South Pacific Whale Research project since 1999. She has been a key personnel in the field season preparation and execution.
