Scott Baker is an Associate Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Auckland. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Studies from New College of the University of South Forida, conferred in 1977, and a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Hawaii, conferred in 1985. Since 1985, he has held research and teaching positions with the Smithsonian Institute, the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity at the United States National Cancer Institute, Victoria University, the University of Hawaii, and his present position at the University of Auckland. In 2001 the Royal Society of New Zealand awarded him a Science & Technology Medal in recognition of his work on conservation genetics.

Scott's research and teaching relate to molecular and demographic forces influencing diversity and distribution of natural populations, particularly populations of endangered and commercially valuable species. His work therefore includes a range of subjects within the biological sciences, in particular Molecular Evolution, Molecular Systematics, Population Ecology and Conservation Biology.

Scott is presently leader of the Ecology & Evolution Group in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Auckland. He is also a New Zealand delegate to the Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission, a member of the Cetacean Specialist Group of IUCN - the World Conservation Union, a member of the Society for Marine Mammal Sciences and associate editor Journal of Marine Mammal Science and the Journal of Heredity.
